Having arrived fairly late the previous evening, we were not able fully to take in the beauty of our camp location, which gave us good views down onto the River Nile, and a glimpse at some of the rapids that some of the group would be negotiating later that morning. Whilst the rafting group psyched themselves up, (and checked the terms of their travel insurance !!) the remainder of us made our way to a local school, and a project run by softpowereducation.com   an organisation set up to promote "education thru friendship thru adventure" The organisation

was set up in 1997 by Hannah Small, who, at that time, whilst working as a tour guide, became aware of the appetite of visitors to contribute a little to the local communities. Tourists were encouraged on their visits to contribute a little time and effort, in an effort to refurbish the local school in this case, With a further 20 schools in their sights, it is an ongoing venture. We played our part, and helped for a couple of hours in redecorating the newly refurbished building. The children, who were on school holiday that week paid us a visit and helped, and kept us amused. We bought a

T-shirt, which included one for the children, as this was to be their "school uniform" which they had requested. But as the general idea was to minimise expense for the children's parents - the T-shirt option was chosen. As we all got stuck in, the walls of the school were quickly redecorated, along with some of the children I might add, as they attempted to master use of the paint roller. We had a great time taking photos, and experiencing the delight of the children as they viewed themselves on the digital screens. We visited a local potter in the village, whilst sheltering from a torrential
downpour. As we walked back towards the camp, we met some more of the local children. Despite their poverty, they are always happy, always smiling. Having got back to camp - and cleaned up following our painting spree - met the rafters on return - did a swift head-count - all there !! " I  had time to walk down to the shores of the river for a spot of birdwatching, whilst Nancy visited the nearby source of the River Nile. Later that afternoon we had a coke in the lodge watching another torrential downpour.
Had a beautiful sunset that evening. Watched the video of all the group rafting - the painting didn't seem to be so bad after all !!
